The Brigittenau gasometer at Forsthausgasse 11 (today: Straßengeviert Forsthausgasse / Hopsagasse ) in Vienna's 20th district of Brigittenau was a gas tank for the Vienna Gas Works.
history
Since all English-owned Viennese gasworks would be demolished or transferred to the municipality of Vienna at the end of 1911, there was a corresponding need for construction and renovation of urban gas systems.
The Brigittenau gasometer was built from 1909 to 1911 together with the Leopoldau gas works , from which it was fed by a pipeline that ran over the Kaiser-Franz-Josefsbrücke bridge at the time , by the German company that had also constructed the gasometer in Simmering. In contrast to the other gasometers in Vienna at that time, this one was built without a decorative and protective brick facade. The building was originally intended as a Heiligenstadt gas container in the 19th district of Vienna on Hagenwiese (today: Kreilplatz ), but the project was averted by political intervention. In August 1909, the municipality of Vienna acquired the Brigittenau building plot (10,000 m²) from the Allgemeine Österreichische Baugesellschaft .
On August 4, 1911, during a test carried out with compressed air, the gas container collapsed after this test had already been carried out correctly twice. This time, however, a steel plate detached itself from the canister so that the compressed air could escape quickly. As a result of the rapid collapse, the telescopic gas container tipped over and was badly damaged. Since the workers were able to get to safety in time, nobody was harmed.
After the repair work, the gas tank was put into operation on December 11, 1911.
In 1953 the roof of the gas tank had to be renovated due to corrosion damage. During this time, the other eleven gas containers located in Vienna had to take over the task of the Brigittenau gasometer. Around 63 million liters of water were pumped out of the sealing basin over a period of 15 days, taking into account the fish population in the Danube Canal.
In 1985 the Brigittenau gasometer was canceled.
