Caspar Heidanus (also Gaspar or Caspar van der Heyden ; * 1530 in Mechelen , † May 7, 1586 in Bacharach ) was a German-Dutch Reformed theologian .

Life

Heidanus was born to wealthy parents. At the age of about 16 he turned to Protestantism and was then cast out by his family and was therefore forced to pay for his own living. He worked as a shoemaker and studied the Bible at the same time . Around 1550 he worked as a reformer , in 1554 he went to Johannes a Lasco in Emden to train as a preacher .

Heidanus was a preacher at the Dutch congregation in Frankfurt am Main from 1558 to 1560 . He initially returned to Antwerp and in 1564 accepted a preaching position in Frankenthal in the Palatinate . His time in Frankenthal was interrupted by an episode in Antwerp in 1566/1567, which ended with his expulsion from Antwerp in 1567. In 1571 he was a participant in the Frankenthal Religious Discussion and translated the minutes into Dutch. Also in 1571 he was President of the Synod of Emden .

Heidanus returned to the Netherlands about three years later. After he was also President of the Synod of Dordrecht in 1574, he became a preacher in Middelburg from 1574 to 1578 and again in Antwerp from 1579 to 1985. From there he was expelled again after the Spanish conquest and accepted a position as a church inspector in Bacharach. He died there after a short time.

Abraham Heidanus was his grandson.
