Gaston Bridel

Gaston Bridel (born December 1, 1895 in Montreux , † May 23, 1982 in Prilly , Canton of Vaud ) was a Swiss journalist . From 1938 to 1960 he was editor-in-chief of the Geneva newspaper Tribune de Genève .

Life

Bridel was the son of the Protestant pastor Eugène Bridel († 1929) and Alice Bridel geb. Boiceau († 1946). He had six siblings, including National Councilor Georges Bridel. Bridel studied theology and philosophy at the University of Lausanne . He was married to Simone Bridel geb. Dubrit, who died a year and a half before him in 1980, and had three children with her. His daughter Danielle († 2004) was a lawyer at the Federal Social Insurance Office, from 1976 head of the health insurance department, his son Claude († 2007) rector of the University of Lausanne.

From 1944 to 1946 Bridel was President of the Swiss Press Association (VSP, today imprint ). Bridel was a theater lover, he himself wrote the theater review in his newspaper, was president from 1930 to 1938, then honorary president of the Théâtre du Jorat in Mézières and also played himself, including the Vaudois freedom hero Major Davel in the eponymous drama by René Morax . He was a board member and from 1974 an honorary member of the Alliance culturelle romande, founded in 1961, and a member of the Swiss Commission for UNESCO .

Professional career

After graduating, Bridel joined the Gazette de Lausanne as an editor in 1919 and was appointed Secretary General in 1927. At the beginning of 1938 he moved to the Tribune de Genève as director-chief editor , which developed into a popular quality paper under his direction. He retired at the end of 1960.
