Gaston Floquet

Achille Marie Gaston Floquet (born December 15, 1847 in Épinal , † October 7, 1920 in Nancy ) was a French mathematician .

Floquet attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris and studied from 1869 at the École normal supérieure in Paris, interrupted by military service in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 as a lieutenant. In 1873 he finished his studies and became a mathematics teacher at the Lyceum in Belfort . In 1875 he received his agrégation in mathematics and became a professor at the Lyceum in Angers and in 1876 in Clermont-Ferrand . In 1878 he became Maître de conférences at the University of Nancy and in 1879 he received his doctorate from the Sorbonne (Sur la théorie des equations différentielles linéaires). In the same year he became a professor at the University of Nancy and from 1880 had the chair of pure mathematics and analysis .

He was mainly concerned with the theory of ordinary differential equations (see Floquet's theorem ), but also published on astronomy and mechanics.
