Gastone Medin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gastone Medin (born July 6, 1905 in Split , Austria-Hungary ; † 1973 in Velletri near Rome, Italy ) was an Italian film architect , "the most important and best-employed set designer in the cinema of the Mussolini era."

Life

Medin joined film in 1928 after studying physics and mathematics at the university, after having met the directors Mario Camerini and Alessandro Blasetti . Until 1945 he worked with almost every filmmaker in his country, including Mario Bonnard , Gennaro Righelli , Guido Brignone , Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia and Mario Mattòli . Medin created “the style of 'calligraphism', which, in its formal rigor, saw itself as a counterpoint to the pomp of historical dramas and the fluffy extravagance of the Telefoni Bianchi at the time of the fascist cinema.” With this, he also took the stylistic design of the one after the end of the war in 1945 anticipated flourishing, neorealist cinemas in Italy , even if he was only involved in a production of this type of film with Vittorio de Sica's shoe shine.

Instead, Medin's film structures from the early post-war period primarily determine the look of various costume fabrics, opera and operetta films by veteran director Carmine Gallone, as well as several cheerful contemporary stories about the young stars Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren ( Pane, amore series, Das Gold von Neapel ). In 1955, Medin returned to neorealist cinema (De Sicas Das Dach ) and then designed the decorations for a few Hollywood productions made in Europe. Medin's impressive career, which included the creation of film constructions for over 150 films in just 32 years, sounded like de Sica's Oscar- winning mother-daughter drama in 1960 and yet they largely live out. In 1961 he finally withdrew from the celluloid industry.
