action

Rome, in the early post-war period. Luisa, who earns her living as a waitress, and the mason Natale have just married. Since the housing shortage was so great in the Italian capital during the 1950s, the young couple had to stay with Natale's parents without having a single room to themselves. The situation is tense for everyone, especially since Natale has a difficult relationship with Cesare, his sister's husband. One day Luisa heard of a peculiar city ordinance, according to which anyone who pulls up a house on public property overnight may no longer be evicted for the same. The central feature of completion is: The house must have a roof as the crowning glory.

With the help of a few colleagues, Natale tries to make the impossible possible. But building a house in such a short time seems more difficult than initially thought, even if Natale takes care of the building materials: there are setbacks, unexpected incidents and even a denunciation of this action by an adversary to the police. But it comes too late. When the state power approaches in the early morning, Luisa is already sitting on the bed of her temporary mini-accommodation, in her arms a baby "borrowed" from her neighbor. Unfortunately, the (title) roof was not completely finished, because the ordinance of the Roman authorities provides for a “proper” roof. But how can the police dispute a "Mamma romana" for her home if only a few roof tiles are missing? The state power shows its heart and recognizes the house, according to the regulations, as properly completed.

Production notes

The roof was de Sica's attempt to approach the neorealist cinema genre, which has now largely survived but was extremely popular in the early post-war period, in a humorous way. The premiere of the film took place on October 6, 1956 in Rome, the German premiere took place in the GDR on August 23, 1957. Das Dach started operating in the Federal Republic of Germany on May 16, 1958.

Gastone Medin designed the film structures and Fabrizio Carafa designed the costumes .

Reviews

“Vittorio De Sica, as a performer mostly a cheerful and well-versed connoisseur of life, has once again stuck to the darker side of existence as a director and produced a dreary film in an environment with little church mouse that only clears towards the end. (...) In his style, De Sica worked with laypeople and apprentices and led them so excellently that a round and mature opus with clear but unobtrusive social criticism was created. "

- Der Spiegel , issue 25 from June 18, 1958

“The film describes the plight of the poor and pleads for belief in the good in people. It is typical that at the end of the day the police officers' consent is required to ensure the success of the company. In this way, social criticism suddenly has an idyllic aspect. But the realistic drawing of everyday life, which is equipped with precise details, remains convincing; The amateur actors' game also remains convincing. "

- Reclams film guide, by Dieter Krusche, collaboration: Jürgen Labenski. P. 549. Stuttgart 1973

"Poetic, comical and socially critical aspects in a neorealist everyday story with amateur actors."
