location

The listed control room was part of the Quedlinburg control room and ditch system as an early warning and defense system in the area. It consisted of around a dozen watchtowers as well as land defenses in the form of wall-ditch systems and thorn bush hedges. The control room is in the area of Wedderstedt , a district of the municipality of Selke-Aue , on the district road 1361 between Quedlinburg and Gatersleben in the vicinity of a small bush.

history

The watch tower was probably built in the 14th century and served to protect the city of Quedlinburg. It was particularly important in the Middle Ages because it was at the crossroads of two important traffic routes. This was the old military route from the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel area to the eastern border on the Saale. Here he crossed the old trade route from Goslar via Quedlinburg along the eastern foothills of the Hakels to Magdeburg . In 1460, the Gaterslebener Warte is mentioned in Quedlinburg council bills when a rope was brought to the control room. In 1470, according to the bills, a "ward basket" was brought to the control room to wind up food and drinking water. In 1521 the control room was renovated. In the 1550 and 1560s, the cost of a watchman was settled. At the beginning of the 19th century , a farmer from Badeborn broke stones on the west side of the Wartturm to build a barn .

The tower was about 18-20 meters high. Its diameter was 5.5 meters. Today only the eastern half of the round tower with a height of around 14 meters is preserved. The former dome attachment can be seen on the inside at a height of about 10 meters. The control room is made of sandstone blocks and is not plastered. In 2018, the Quedlinburg waiting room carried out a renovation of the Gaterslebener waiting room in order to stop the progressive deterioration of the structure.
