Sunil Manohar Gavaskar (nickname: Sunny) (born July 10, 1949 in Bombay , Maharashtra , India ) is a former Indian cricketer . He was the captain of the Indian team in 47 test matches and 37 one-day international cricket matches (ODIs). Gavaskar is considered one of the best opening batsmen in cricket history.

Career

The only 1.65 meter tall Sunil Gavaskar took part in his first test for India against the team of the West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad in March 1971. In this test series against the West Indies, which comprised a total of 5 test matches, he left a lasting impression, as he managed a total of excellent 774 runs, an average of 154.80 runs per wicket. He was the first Indian to achieve 4 Centuries (at least 100 runs) in a test series. With his performance, he played a major role in ensuring that the Indian team was able to win a test series against the West Indies in the Caribbean for the first time. In total, Gavaskar completed 125 encounters in test cricket for the Indian team during his career, in which he scored 10122 runs (51.12 runs per wicket). On the Tour of Pakistan in India in 1986/87 he reached the mark of 10,000 test runs and was the first cricketer to ever succeed. In addition, he achieved 34 Test Centuries, which he held for a long time the record for most Test Centuries. This record was broken in 2005 by his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar . Furthermore, Sunil Gavaskar completed a total of 108 ODIs for India, in which he scored 3,092 runs (35.13 runs per wicket). With the Indian team he also took part in four cricket world championships ( 1975 , 1979 , 1983 and 1987 ). With his team he was able to win the tournament in 1983.
