The rivers lie in the SW of Gascon and are part of the Adour river system

Under Gave means the generic name for a watercourse in the French Pyrenees , particularly in the old province of Béarn and Bigorre , now in the departments of Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrenees lie. They all belong to the Adour river system .

The ancient name Gave has its roots in pre- Celtic times and is reflected in the Occitan or Gascognic language. In the last century, the return to the old traditions made this type of river name very popular. The old names became common again and superseded those previously used or are used as an alternative to them.

When using the term in individual cases, the term Gave is supplemented by the name of a town or valley from which the river comes.

example

The problem with this type of river designation is that a river can change its designation several times in its course from the source to the mouth if other places or valleys are relevant for certain river sections.

example

  • The Gave de Brousset - Gave d'Ossau - Gave d'Oloron stream changes its name twice, but is described as a single river under the name Gave d'Oloron according to www.sandre.fr .
