Gazarenos Coloneiates

Gazarenos ( Middle Greek Γαζαρηνός , also Zagorenos ; † approx. March 824), nickname Kolon (e) iates , was a Byzantine rebel and a follower of the opposing emperor Thomas the Slav .

Life

After Emperor Leo V was murdered in December 820 at the instigation of General Michael , Thomas rebelled against the new ruler in Constantinople and was crowned emperor in Asia Minor with the backing of Caliph Al-Ma'mun . During the uprising, Gazarenos Koloneiates - the nickname suggests an origin from Koloneia - was in command of the fortress Saniana near Ankyra on the west bank of the Halys in the border area of the subjects Bukellarion , Anatolikon and Armeniakon .

After the capture and execution of Thomas and his co-regent Anastasios in the autumn of 823, Gazarenos refused to hand over the fortress to Emperor Michael II. The latter offered him the dignity of a Magistros for the task of his resistance by Chrysobull , but Gazarenos refused and continued to carry out raids from his base. Michael managed to move a clerical subordinate of the Gazareno named Oikonomos to betrayal by promising him the appointment of Metropolitan of Neokaisareia . Oikonomos then made sure that Gazarenos was no longer allowed to enter Saniana. While trying to flee to the Abbasid Caliphate in Syria , the rebel was caught and executed.

Another supporter of Thomas, Choireas , was also able to assert himself in Lycaonia until the spring of 824, only to then suffer the same fate as Gazarenos.
