Anastasios (co-emperor of Thomas)
Anastasios ( Middle Greek Ἀναστάσιος ; † approx. October / November 823 ) was the adopted son and co-regent of the Byzantine counter-emperor Thomas the Slav .
Life
After Emperor Leo V was murdered in December 820 at the instigation of General Michael , Thomas rebelled against the new ruler in Constantinople and was crowned emperor in Asia Minor with the backing of Caliph Al-Ma'mun . Shortly afterwards he adopted one of his military leaders under the name Konstantios and most likely crowned him co-emperor, but soon afterwards he was killed in a battle in Asia Minor.
In order to close the gap, Thomas took another of his generals in place of his son and raised him, allegedly a former monk , to co-regent under the name Anastasios. When Thomas besieged Constantinople from the end of 821, Anastasios commanded the troops that were deployed against the Theodosian wall . After the siege failed at the end of 822, Anastasios fled to Bizye , but was extradited to Michael II in October 823 after Thomas was captured and impaled and executed in the same cruel manner.
Two supporters of Thomas, Choireas and Gazarenos Colony , were able to stay in Asia Minor until the spring of 824.
