Gebhard worker

Gebhard Arbeiter (born August 27, 1944 in Griffen ; † February 25, 2015 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian state civil servant, trade unionist and politician ( SPÖ ). He was a member of the Federal Council from 1989 to 1990 and was a member of the Carinthian state parliament .

education and profession

Worker completed a commercial apprenticeship after primary and secondary school and then worked as a commercial clerk. He worked for the Austrian Armed Forces from 1963 to 1969 and had been a state official since 1969.

politics

From 1959 on, Arbeiter became involved in youth policy and in the youth trade union as well as in the preparatory organizations of the SPÖ, the socialist youth and the young generation . Furthermore, Arbeiter had been Section Chairman of Section 20 for many periods. Worker was heavily involved in trade unions and was elected to the Works Council in 1970. In 1974 Arbeiter became chairman of the works council of the regional hospitals of Carinthia, in 1976 he also rose to chair of the central works council of the Carinthian hospitals and in 1983 he was elected deputy chairman of the Carinthian public service union (GÖD). In addition, Arbeiter was the chairman of GÖD - Section IX (institutions and companies). At the end of 1999 a controversy arose over the actual or supposed use of a Goebbels quote in an interview with the editor-in-chief of the Kärntner Woche ; after a court settlement, the party's internal arbitration tribunal only issued a complaint. In May 2000 Arbeiter was elected chairman of GÖD Carinthia. Due to his numerous offices, Arbeiter was also referred to as works council emperor in the media .

Arbeiter was a member of the Klagenfurt municipal council from 1979 to 1990 and from April 21, 1989 to June 6, 1990 represented Carinthia as a parliamentarian for the SPÖ in the Federal Council. Afterwards, Arbeiter belonged to the Carinthian state parliament for the first time from 1990 to 1994 and was again Klagenfurt municipal council from 1997 to 1999. Since 1999 he has been a member of the state parliament again. Up to his retirement in 2009, Arbeiter was chairman of the Committee on Family, Social Affairs, Health, Generations and Sport.

Private

Arbeiter was married and had three children.
