Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG is a family company with headquarters in Hamburg .

Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG is a wholesaler and retailer for the duty-free industry . With its two business areas of retail and distribution, the trading company is the market leader in Europe and is the only family company among the global companies in the sector.

history

In 1879 the company began with the duty and tax-exempt wholesaling of tobacco products and spirits . The focus was on supplying ship chandlers and shipping companies. At that time, Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG was based in Hamburg's Speicherstadt . Today, the company's headquarters are in the immediate vicinity of Kaispeicher B in the Elbtor district of HafenCity.

Heinemann has been supplying the new duty-free shops on ferries to Scandinavia since the 1950s . The first airline customers followed in 1953 and 1954 ( Icelandic Airlines and Deutsche Lufthansa )

At the beginning of the 1950s, a new sales market was also found: Perfume and cosmetics were added to the range, later accessories , confectionery and gift items followed .

Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG was awarded the first retail license for duty-free at an airport in 1969 for Cologne / Bonn Airport . Own shops soon followed at other airports. When the EU abolished duty-free and tax-exempt shopping for travel within the EU on July 1, 1999, Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG renamed their stores to Travel Value and was able to expand their market share in Europe. Since 2008 the company has been calling some of its self-operated shops Heinemann Duty Free & Travel Value. The Heinemann Duty Free brand is now present at numerous airports around the world and operates its largest duty free shop at an airport at Sydney Airport.

In the 1990s, the company's growth exceeded the storage capacity in the Speicherstadt. A logistics center was built in Hamburg-Allermöhe and put into operation in 2003, which is one of the most modern in Europe. From here, Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG supplies its customers as well as its own shops at airports, on ferry and cruise ships and border crossings. There is space for 45,000 pallets in the high rack and 55 robots do the work. There are also 20,000 m² of handling space and 30 gates for incoming and outgoing goods.

The warehouse building in the Speicherstadt was converted into the company headquarters. From there, the company is now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Heinemann family, represented by cousins Claus Heinemann and Gunnar Heinemann and Gunnar Heinemann's son Max. They share the management responsibilities with Kay Spanger, Raoul Spanger and Stephan Ernst. Around 8,000 employees work for the Gebr. Heinemann group.

The company operates 340 travel value & duty-free shops, licensed branded boutiques and concept stores at 74 airports in 28 countries as well as shops at border crossings and on board cruise ships. More than 150,000 customers shop in these stores every day. It also supplies more than 1,000 customers in more than 100 countries, who in turn are retailers in the travel market. Sales at airports and on ferry ships, in border shops at border crossings, in on-board boutiques on cruise ships, with the delivery of airlines for their on-board sales, ship chandlers and diplomatic missions, military shops and in duty-free zones totaled 4.6 billion euros in 2018 .

On January 1, 2012, the company changed its legal form from a KG to an SE & Co. KG.

In 2014 the second logistics center in Erlensee went into operation.

In 2019, the company operated 340 airport shops as well as shops at border crossings and on board cruise ships and was one of the world market leaders in airport shopping.
