Release the hemp! is a song by Stefan Raab together with the Reggae - Pop singer Shaggy from 2002. It is based on the sample of a dictum of Grünen- politician Hans-Christian Stroebele .

An exclamation from Hans-Christian Ströbele is the basis of the song.

Raab raps with a disguised voice in the style of a reggae musician. The sample serves as a refrain, supplemented by a sung “eieiei” and some toasts . The first two stanzas are sung by Raab, the third and last stanza is sung by Shaggy. The accompanying video shows Stefan Raab and a number of musicians in a chilled atmosphere in a kind of living room making music and dancing. Raab himself plays the guitar or sits in a recliner. Shaggy's part is played on a television, which also shows the film material with Ströbele from the Hanfparade.

background

Hans-Christian Ströbele made the exclamation “Release the hemp! - Immediately! ”During the Hanfparade 2002 in Berlin . He directed it to several police officers who stopped a Green Youth car and confiscated several hemp plants that were used as decorations. These plants contained only a small amount of THC and "came from state-sponsored, legal cultivation in the Uckermark ". The plants had previously been approved as decoration. Stefan Raab discovered the quote on a TV show and presented it on his TV Total show . After his broadcast he composed a rap song with Shaggy around the sample and made a video for it.

Ströbele only found out about the video afterwards. He initially considered filing a lawsuit, but then appeared on an episode of TV Total in which he stated that the play was serving his goals. Although he wouldn't use marijuana himself , he has been advocating legalization for several years . After he was initially promised a sale, Ströbele commissioned a lawyer in January 2003 to assert his copyrights. He was awarded a total of 20,000 euros, which he donated to a campaign for hemp legalization and drug prevention .

In fact, the saying is grammatically incorrect. Hemp is masculine in German , so it should have been "Give the hemp free!"
