The Geißwandtunnel is a road tunnel along the B 145 Salzkammergutstraße on the banks of the Traunsee in Upper Austria . Forming the local bypass of Traunkirchen .

Data

The tunnel is 2119  meters long and has two lanes . An escape gallery runs parallel to the main gallery and is connected to the tunnel at regular intervals. Construction work on the tunnel began in May 2005, the tunnel breakthrough took place on October 14, 2005, and traffic was opened on December 16, 2007. Together with the Bartlkreuz tunnel , which opened in 1996, and the two shorter Sonnstein and Franz-Joseph tunnels , it forms the chain of tunnels Traunsee . Based on traffic counts, it is estimated that around 85% of the traffic will use the tunnel in the future, which means a massive relief for the center of Traunkirchen.

meaning

Due to the steadily increasing traffic density on the B 145, on the one hand an expansion of the road became necessary, on the other hand Traunkirchen suffered increasingly from the through traffic flowing through the town center . Due to the local conditions (location between mountain and lake , settlement ), only a tunnel was considered as a bypass road.

Security technology

The Geißwandtunnel has safety devices and control systems for the state of the art . An automatic fire extinguishing system was installed in the ceiling of the tunnel to prevent fire disasters like the one in the Tauern tunnel in 1999 . The escape tunnel allows trapped passengers, the danger zone on every 250 m applied crossways to leave, and allows the emergency services the advance to the accident site.

The redundantly designed control and traffic management system reacts independently to problems such as traffic jams , poor visibility or vehicles with breakdowns , including reducing the maximum permitted speed and warning messages via the traffic control systems . In addition, the entire tunnel is monitored by video .

In the course of the completion of the Geißwand tunnel, the other tunnels in the tunnel chain were also brought up to date with the latest safety technology and integrated into the control system. It is controlled either locally from the tunnel control room at the north portal or by the Gmunden tunnel monitoring center .
