background

The place name, which sounds strange in German, due to the similar sounding word " Geil ", is derived from the plant species gorse (Danish: gyvel ). Shortly behind the German-Danish border near Kruså is the similarly named settlement Øster Gejl ( location ). North of the Schlei is the place Geel (also Gejl in Danish ) ( location ). The agricultural place was first mentioned in 1742. The place was already marked on a Danish map from 1857/58. Geil was also shown on a subsequent map of the greater Flensburg area from 1863. Geil was also recorded on the map of the Prussian land survey around 1879. Today, Geil consists of two to three working farms and around fifteen buildings. Today the “Geiler Honig” manufactory, which is dedicated to honey production, comes from the village .
