Hairy legume

The yellow vetch is an annual herbaceous plant . The approximately 20 to 60 cm long stem grows ascending or climbing. The hairiness of the yellow vetch is very variable; it can be loosely hairy, but it can also be completely bald.

The foliage leaves with tendrils are usually pinnate in six to eight pairs. The linear and elongated leaflets reach lengths of about 10 to 20 mm and widths of 3 to 5 mm.

The short-stalked flowers grow individually or more rarely in pairs in the leaf axils. The zygomorphic flowers reach lengths of 20 to 25 mm. The two upper calyx teeth are significantly shorter than the lower ones. The crown is colored light yellow to lemon yellow, whereby the plate can also take on reddish tones. The yellow vetch blooms mainly from April to June.

The legumes are protruding rough-haired, with the hair sitting on a strong knot.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.

Occurrence

The yellow vetch is a Mediterranean plant that is inconsistently brought to Western and Central Europe.

Vicia lutea grows in cereal weed communities. It prefers calcareous clay soils. It loves warmth and carries salt.

In Germany, the yellow vetch is mostly rare and inconsistent, especially in the warmer southwest of the area.

In Austria it is very rare, while in Switzerland it is very scattered over the whole area.
