Convoy RA 60

The convoy RA 60 was an allied northern sea convoy , which was put together in September 1944 in the Soviet Murmansk and went largely unloaded to the Scottish Firth of Clyde . The Allies lost a total of two freighters with a total of 14,359 GRT to U 310 .

The convoy RA 60 consisted of 32 cargo ships. On September 28, 1944, they left Murmansk ( Lage ) in the direction of the Firth of Clyde ( Lage ). The convoy's commodore was Captain GH Creswell, who had embarked on the Samtredy . The convoy was closely secured by the escort carriers HMS Campania and HMS Striker , the cruiser HMS Diadem and the destroyers HMS Milne , HMS Marne , HMS Meteor , HMS Musketeer , HMS Saumarez , HMS Scorpion , HMS Venus , HMS Verulam , HMS Virago , HMS Volage , HMCS Algonquin and HMCS Sioux . The 20th and 8th escort groups, including the destroyers HMS Keppel , HMS Bulldog and HMS Whitehall , the sloop HMS Cygnet and the corvettes HMS Allington Castle and HMS Bamborough Castle escorted the convoy.

The RA 60 convoy bypassed the submarine groups “Grimm” with U 278 , U 312 , U 425 , U 737 , U 921 , U 956 as well as U 997 and “Zorn” with U 293 , U 310 , U after sailing 315 , U 363 , U 365 , U 387 , U 636 , U 668 , U 965 , U 968 , U 992 and U 995 . Only U 310 , which happened to be on the convoy's course and was overrun, was shot on September 28, 1942. It sank the freighters Edward H. Crockett (7176 BRT) and Samsuva (7219 BRT). Further TV torpedoes on escort vehicles failed. On October 5, the convoy reached the Firth of Clyde.
