Convoy PQ 14
The convoy PQ 14 was an allied northern sea convoy , which was put together in March 1942 in Oban , Scotland and brought essential war goods to the Soviet Murmansk . The Allies lost a freighter with 6985 GRT to submarines. Because ice damage 13 freighters and two had minesweepers to Iceland return.
Composition and securing
The convoy PQ 14 consisted of 25 cargo ships. On March 26, 1942, they left Oban, Scotland, for Murmansk. The convoy's commodore was Captain E. Rees, who had embarked on the Empire Howard . Since the convoy drove over Iceland, the Western Local Escort took over the local security until April 12th. It included the destroyer Wilton , the mine sweepers Hebe and Speedy, and the anti -submarine trawlers Chiltern and Northern Wave . This was followed by the Ocean Escort with the destroyers Amazon , Beagle , Beverley and Bulldog , the corvettes Campanula , Oxlip , Saxifrage and Snowflake and the submarine trawlers Ducton , Lord Austin and Lord Middleton until April 19 . The close cover was carried out by the cruisers Edinburgh and Norfolk and the destroyers Foresight and Forester . From 17 April, the convoy was also by the Eastern Local Escort with the Soviet destroyers Gremjaschtschi and Sokruschitelny and the British minesweepers Gossamer , Harrier , Hussar and Niger protected.

In the vicinity of the island of Jan Mayen , pack ice caused severe damage to 13 freighters and 2 minesweepers. These ships then returned to Iceland with the QP 10 convoy . The rest of the convoy successfully fought against German air and submarine attacks from April 15 to 17. Only U 403 sank the freighter Empire Howard (6985 BRT) on April 17th with convoy commodore Captain E. Rees, who was killed in the process. On April 19 the convoy reached Murmansk. He lost a freighter with 6985 GRT.
