The Germans did not sight the convoy. Only the local security vehicles, the mine sweepers HMS Hazard and HMS Speedy had contact with the German 8th destroyer flotilla when approaching PQ 6. Consisting of the destroyers Z 23 , Z 24 , Z 25 and Z 27 , they attacked the two British minesweepers about 14 nm north of Cape Gorodetsky. The HMS Speedy escaped with four hits, while the HMS Hazard was undamaged. On December 20th the convoy reached Murmansk without losses. Five freighters ran along with an icebreaker towards Arkhangelsk. However, they got stuck in the ice near Molotovsk on December 23 and had to hibernate there.
