Convoy RA 52
The convoy RA 52 was an allied northern sea convoy , which was put together in January 1943 in the Soviet Murmansk and drove largely unloaded to the Scottish Loch Ewe . The Allies lost a freighter with 7,460 GRT to German submarine attacks.
Composition and securing
The convoy RA 52 consisted of ten cargo ships. On January 29, 1943, they left the Kola Bay ( location ) off Murmansk for Great Britain. The convoy's commodore was Captain RA Melhuish, who had embarked on the Daldorch . For the longest time, the Ocean Escort took over the close securing with the destroyers HMS Onslaught , HMS Beagle , HMS Bulldog , HMS Forester , HMS Icarus , HMS Matchless , HMS Musketeer , HMS Offa , HMS Onslow and ORP Piorun , the corvettes HMS Honeysuckle , HMS Hyderabad , HMS Rhododendron and HMS Oxlip , the minesweepers HMS Harrier and HMS Seagull and the anti-submarine trawlers HMS Lady Madeleine , HMS Northern Gem , HMS Northern Wave and HMS Vizalma . From January 30 to February 2, the cruisers HMS Bermuda , HMS Glasgow and HMS Kent were also in the convoy. In addition, a remote security group supported the convoy, consisting of the battleship HMS Anson , the cruiser HMS Sheffield and the destroyers HMS Inglefield , HMS Oribi , HMS Obedient and HMS Orkan .

After the convoy was sighted and reported by U 625 on February 1, 1943 , it attacked without success. On February 3, U 255 approached the convoy and sank the freighter Greylock (7460 GRT). On 9 February, the convoy reached the Scottish Loch Ewe ( location ).
