The Gelmerheide nature reserve is located in the area of the independent city of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The area extends northeast of the core city of Münster. The B 219 runs to the west, the Dortmund-Ems Canal flows to the east . The 228.2 hectare nature reserve (NSG) Rieselfelder Münster extends to the north and the 10.45 hectare NSG Huronensee to the east .

Since 1994, a 12.39 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Münster under the identification number MS-011. The area has been placed under protection for the conservation and development of
- Relics of a wet heather with its typical species population as well as the preservation of the near-natural old wood population with remains of alder and birch quarries
- Habitat of typical plant and animal species in these endangered habitats.
