The eponymous Vorbergshügel ( 99.4  m above sea  level ) and the neighboring Mühlenberg ( 97.9  m above sea level ) to the northwest rise around 40 meters above the urban area and form its highest elevations.

The core area of the nature reserve is the almost 4 km long, southeastern section of the further northwest to 119  m above sea level. NHN high Altenberger Ridge , which is separated less by geological or orographic features than by the city limits. This section is called Nienberger heights after the district of Nienberge , north of which the Altenberger Ridge runs out .

Location in the city area

Vorberg's hills begin west of the children's house and end at the city limits, from where the Altenberger ridge extends seamlessly to the northwest. The Nienberge district is located on the southern side and Häger on the northern side .

Overall, the chain of hills can be divided into four parts. The northeastern part is the Mühlenberg at 97.9  m above sea level. NHN .

The second part is the eponymous foothill hill , 98.8  m above sea level. NHN is high and at the same time the most famous elevation in the chain. Due to its close proximity to the Nienberge district, a number of smaller paths run through this part.

The third section, the Hägerfeld part , reaches a height of up to 95.2  m above sea level. NHN . It is bounded to the east by the A1 motorway .

The last and fourth part can be called the Wilbrenniger part . It is only recognizable as a kind of preliminary stage to the actual hills. Due to its close proximity to the Kinderhaus district, this part is very popular with recreational athletes.

In the 1990s, NABU campaigned in particular for the Vorbergs Hügel nature reserve . Nevertheless, the condition of the hedges in the range of hills was repeatedly criticized, whereupon various measures were carried out in 2004 to improve the quality of the nature reserve. This has also increased its importance as a local recreation area .

Recreation room

The range of hills is a recreational area that is widely used by cyclists and joggers. A number of mostly gravel paths and winding paths run through the range of hills. A route of the Münsterland cycling region leads between the Kinderhaus and Nienberge into the nature reserve.
