The Große Bree nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the independent city of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The area extends northeast of the core city of Münster and west of Vadrup , a district of Telgte , along the river Ems , which flows to the north and east . The state road L 588 runs northeast and the Werse flows to the west .

Since 1987, a 62.99 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Münster under the identification number MS-005. The area was put under protection in particular for the preservation and development of the characteristic Emstales, especially of natural and natural river course with its backwaters and its typical habitat units with a variety of rare and protected species and the sandy dry grassland on the lower terrace. The area is characterized by the steep banks and oxbow lakes of the Ems as well as the structure of the hedge and should be preserved in its uniqueness and beauty as well as living space.
