Incidents
Defects on the Lido
In September 2011, the Lido was detained in the port of Castellon de la Plana for six days because an inspection by the port authorities revealed deficiencies in the equipment and the emergency drills of the crew. The case was cited in Turkish shipping circles as an example of unequal treatment against ships from EU member states, which led to an official response from the EU.
Average of the Gelso M
On the morning of March 10, 2012, the ship ran aground on a rock when approaching the port of Augusta off Sicily near Pointe Santa Panagia . The heavy swell had pushed the ship against the rocks off the coast. The Gelso M had at the time of the accident no cargo on board, however, among other things, 190 cubic meters of fuel. The crew of 19 were rescued by the Italian coast guard with two helicopters . Nobody got hurt. According to the shipping company, a machine failure while approaching the port of Augusta was the cause of the accident. The ship's Voyage Data Recorder was recovered on March 13th. The investigation by the VDR revealed that the propeller temporarily came out of the water due to the swell and turned empty. The diesel engine switched off due to the resulting overspeed. On the weekend there were strong winds from the east (30 knots from 37 °) and gusts of wind at 80 miles per hour. After the accident, the ship was at the position 37.10679 ° north, 15.29531 ° east. In the hull there is a crack 14 meters long. The competent authorities have opened an investigation. The Dutch salvage company Smit Salvage was commissioned with pumping out the fuel - as was the case with the Costa Concordia which had crashed a few weeks earlier . The operations were completed by March 28; 387 m³ of fuel and other substances were removed from the ship's hull. The wreck was dismantled and removed by the companies Fratelli Neri and Augustea until August 2013 .
