Gendarmerie (Serbia)
The Žandarmerija ( Serbian - Cyrillic : Жандармерија ) is the gendarmerie of Serbia , it was dissolved at the end of the Second World War . Interior Minister Dušan Mihajlović brought the gendarmerie back to life on June 28, 2001 . The Special Operations Unit (JSO) and the Special Police Unit (PJP) were later added to the gendarmerie. The gendarmerie does both civil and military tasks.

The name "Žandarmerija" ([ ʒandarməˈrija ]) is derived from the French word "Gendarmerie" ([ ʒandarməˈri ]). The history of the Gendarmerie Corps goes back to 1860 , when it originally comprised 120 officers . It was dissolved at the end of the Second World War and brought back to life on June 28, 2001 by Interior Minister Dušan Mihajlović . This happened because of the renaming, from the special police to the gendarmerie. One of the most important tasks was to record the suspects in the murder of Zoran Đinđić .
tasks
The Serbian gendarmerie consists of four battalion-sized units . Each battalion has around 700 to 800 gendarmes. The main bases are in Belgrade , Niš , Novi Sad and Kraljevo .
General tasks:
- Restoring peace and stability,
- Fight against terrorism ,
- Combating violent groups,
- The suppression of rioting in prisons.
Civil duties:
- ensure security and public tranquility,
- Investigation and prevention of organized crime , terrorism and other violent groups,
- protect state and private property,
- In the event of emergencies, natural disasters , resistance to state power and armed conflicts , support and assistance is provided to civilians, authorities and organizations with security tasks.
Military duties:
- To provide and maintain the protection of security, public peace and order,
- protect state and private property,
- support other security forces in emergencies, civil unrest and war in order to suppress unrest,
- strengthen martial law and mobilization,
- to fight and arrest suspicious criminals, terrorists and other violent groups.
Its additional duties are to perform all duties prescribed in the decrees of laws and regulations other than civil, military and other duties and obligations given by the state regulations based on them.
