Gendernauts - a journey through the land of the new sexes is a German documentary by the Hamburg director Monika Treut from 1999 about the transgender scene in San Francisco .

The film portrays various avant-garde artists in San Francisco who, as genderqueers ( non-binary ), evade the scheme of binary gender identities. This "Gendernauts" German "gendernauts" (according to astronaut ) travel through the world of sex ( gender ) and sexuality, without being able to classify themselves by gender and want. The film shows the first group portrait of non-binary people and the Tom Waddell Health Center, a transgender clinic in San Francisco. The shooting for the film took place in the spring of 1998 in San Francisco. Monika Treut produced the film herself with her production company Hyena Films in coproduction with WDR , arte and Hamburger Filmförderung . The cinema premiere was on March 11th, the TV premiere on August 23rd, 2000 on arte.
