The General-Anzeiger (GA) is a daily newspaper based in Rhauderfehn, East Frisia . Its distribution area extends over the Overledingerland (communities Westoverledingen , Rhauderfehn, Ostrhauderfehn in the south-eastern district of Leer ) and the adjacent Oldenburger Land (communities Saterland , Apen , Barßel ). The sold circulation is 7,944 copies, a decrease of 26.8 percent since 1998.

History and frequency of publication

The paper appeared for the first time in April 1888 as "Anzeiger für das Oberledingerland and neighboring area". The first editor was Harm de Vries from Rhauderfehn. The newspaper appeared three times a week. In 1901 de Vries bought the house at bottom 21 in Rhauderfehn. It has been the newspaper's publishing house ever since. This was sold in 1922 to W. Albrecht GmbH from Gummersbach. A year later Siebe Ostendorp came to the GA and took over the management. Ten years later, Ostendorp became a personally liable partner. He was the grandfather of the current editor, Gerfried Engelberg, who joined the GA in 1977. His parents, Siebe Ostendorps daughter Klara and her husband Günter Engelberg, had expanded the newspaper after the Second World War. The GA remained independent for a long time. In the course of time, the GA publishing house also published various advertising papers that were distributed throughout the district of Leer and in the northern district of Emsland .

On January 1, 2002 the GA merged with the Ostfriesen-Zeitung (OZ) in Leer . Since then, both titles and all advertising papers have appeared in the Ostfriesland newspaper group (ZGO). GA and OZ appear with the same cover (national part), which is supplied by the Nordwest-Zeitung from Oldenburg . Within the ZGO there is only one editor-in-chief who heads both the GA and the OZ. Since November 1st, 2018 this has been Joachim Braun.

At the beginning of 2013 Mareike Engelberg, the daughter of Gerfried Engelberg, became the new publisher and in February 2015 co-editor of the GA.
