Genevieve Tobin (born November 29, 1899 in New York City , † July 21, 1995 in Pasadena , California ) was an American actress .

Life

Genevieve Tobin was the daughter of showmen. In 1910 she made her film debut in Uncle Tom's Cabin . She made her Broadway debut at the age of twelve on April 25, 1912 in the play Disraeli . After studying in New York and Paris , from then on she played mainly in the theater, occasionally also in London . After moving to Los Angeles in the early 1930s , she was increasingly seen in feature films. She was mainly seen in supporting roles in productions for Warner Brothers and RKO Pictures .

On September 20, 1938, Tobin married the director William Keighley . When the marriage began, her acting career largely ended. From then on she traveled with him worldwide to his filming locations and lived with him mainly in London and Paris . During this time she began to study painting and became a serious artist. They remained married until Keighley's death in 1984.
