history

Local history

Erkner was first mentioned in 1579, the Christianization of the region began in the 12th century. While the population was 175 in 1837, in 1896 there were almost 3,000 inhabitants due to the construction of a few factories.

In 1863 a separate churchyard was laid out in Erkner on Neu-Zittauer Straße. The church belonged to Woltersdorf , where the church was also located. Church services have been held in the station building since 1853, in the old schoolhouse from 1857 and in the new schoolhouse from 1878.

Building history

In 1873 the district office started negotiations with the aim of erecting a church building in Erkner. However, it was not until Empress Auguste Viktoria took over the patronage of the church on July 2, 1895 that the efforts were successful. In the same month a church building association was founded, which eagerly collected donations and was able to purchase suitable land. On December 8, 1895, the representatives of the commune, the parish and the state and church authorities, as well as the Empress, decided to begin building preparations immediately. The piano manufacturer Carl Bechstein donated the building site for the church as well as 7,000 marks for building costs up to the estimated 100,000 marks. In addition, Bechstein donated the three bells , the organ and a grand piano. Planning and project management were in the hands of the architect Ludwig von Tiedemann , while the construction management was carried out by Robert Leibnitz .

The foundation stone was laid on May 4, 1896 , and the shell was completed by mid-September. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 22, 1896 . The expansion was continued in the summer of 1897. In the presence of the Empress Auguste Viktoria and a prince, the solemn inauguration of the church, which was named Galilee , took place on October 24, 1897 . - The construction costs came to 110,000 marks in the end.

On April 23, 1933, the Luther Hall of the community was inaugurated. In a bombing raid on March 8, 1944, which targeted the industrial facilities in Erkner, the church was destroyed down to the foundation walls and the steeple. The entire interior - except for the sacrament implements - also fell victim to the attack. The church registers kept in the basement of the rectory were also destroyed, except for one, which became illegible.

On Easter Sunday 1946, the church bells rang for the first time after the attack. The reconstruction of the Luther Hall, which began in 1948, was completed in 1951 and the first service was held here on March 29 of that year. In 1954 roofing work was carried out on the church tower roof. The church was rededicated on May 4, 1958. The costs for the reconstruction amounted to 209,474.00 DM.

The new organ from the Sauer workshop was inaugurated on December 17, 1961. An extension to the Luther Hall was completed in September 1970 and the church was renovated in 1982. A tower renovation was completed on October 31, 1999 and the round window in the nave was completed on December 12, 2004.
