Genius Company Physics is an educational game created by Cornelsen Verlag and the first part of the three-part Genius series . The game, which was launched in 2004, is about the rise of a small bicycle workshop into a global corporation. In the course of the game, physical facts are learned and applied.

Gameplay

General

At the beginning of the game you choose a region. The choices are: The Ruhr area , Detroit , Berlin , London and Melbourne . These regions have an increasing level of difficulty. The decisive factors are the available building area and the available raw material deposits.

The object of the game is to carry out a space mission. To do this, an economically strong city has to be built and certain tasks have to be solved.

Over time, a total of six characters appear who give the player advice, but also give physical questions and development assignments.

Planning and economics

You start in each region in 1850 with a bicycle workshop and a certain amount of start-up capital. The aim is to build a large group . Money is made through export . Money is made by selling goods. At the same time you have to build housing estates for the workers. The productivity of individual factories can be increased by building administration buildings and infrastructure .

Over time, new branches of production and buildings will be unlocked. The game is based on real technical progress. It often happens that some branches of production become unprofitable, while others increase significantly in value. Here, too, the game is based on real, historical developments on the markets.

research

In the course of the game, the characters set various physical tasks from the areas of mechanics , electricity , astronomy , thermodynamics and optics . To solve the tasks one receives hints in correspondence with leading scientists of the time, as well as from a physical magazine. You have several attempts to solve a problem. With the right solution, you get economic benefits such as money or an increase in production. A wrong solution can lead to falling productivity, a strike or cash withdrawal. The tasks are designed according to the course of the game. For example, one task at the beginning requires finding suitable insulation materials for the workers' toilets. Later assignments deal with the development of airplanes and missiles. The tasks are very varied: fill in the blanks, write on sketches, assign objects, make calculations or carry out experiments.

Characters

The characters primarily serve to impart knowledge within the game. They also provide motivation and link the game sections. Each character has its own subject area, to which it often gives tasks.

  • Meister Hoffmann : Founder of the bicycle workshop, which forms the basis of his own group. It appears especially in the early stages of a game with questions about mechanics
  • Assistant Maria Roloff : Emancipated, modern, young lady. Your orders mostly relate to the development of new machines.
  • Assistant Henning Wagner : highly intelligent, scientific employee. Takes on very complex tasks related to electrical engineering and astronomy.
  • Mrs. Friedrich : Accountant, responsible for marketing. She seldom gives orders, mostly general arithmetic problems.
  • Georg : Apprentice in the workshop, needs help at the beginning for his upcoming journeyman's examination and asks basic questions.
  • Production Manager Majowski : Chairman of the Works Council, a loyal, indispensable employee. He also usually gives arithmetic problems.

reception

The ratings for Genius Enterprise Physics were mixed to positive. At Metacritic the game received 63/100 points.

At GameSpy , the game received three out of five stars. The idea was praised, but the sometimes very high degree of difficulty of the tasks with insufficient assistance and the implementation of the economic simulation were criticized.
