Geoffrey "Geoff" Lees (born October 1, 1933 in Rotherham ; † June 6, 2019 ibid) was an English football player .

Career

Lees, son of longtime professional footballer Joe Lees , was a member of the junior team of Barnsley FC in the early 1950s , with whom he played in the Northern Intermediate League ; in April 1951 he represented the league in a selection game against the Lancashire League . He had previously done his military service in Oswestry from 1950 . There were numerous other football talents in the unit, including the later national players Tommy Taylor and Ronnie Clayton . In March 1951 he received his first professional contract with Barnsley, but did not get beyond assignments in the reserve team in the following years.

For the 1955/56 season he came to Bradford City in the Third Division North on a free transfer , but subsequently played mostly for the reserve team in the Midland League . After his third division debut on March 30, 1956 at Carlisle United (final score 0-0), he replaced Peter Jackson again on the last two game days and experienced a 4-2 home win over Mansfield Town as the right runner . At the end of the season, Lees decided to end his footballing career and instead to take up teacher training in Sheffield , the main reason for this decision was his previous role in the military as a physical training instructor. He then became a PE teacher at Rawmarsh School in Rotherham and spied for various football clubs, including Leeds United . He was also a youth coach at Barnsley FC for years , where he coached Mick McCarthy and David Speedie, among others .
