Geoffrey Alderman

Geoffrey Alderman (born February 10, 1944 ) is a British historian, political scientist and education manager.

Life

Geoffrey Alderman studied history with Martin Gilbert , Alan JP Taylor and Cecil Roth in Oxford from 1962 and received his doctorate there in 1969 (DPhil). From 1972 to 1994 he taught history and political science at Royal Holloway, University of London , received a professorship in 1989 and was also Vice Chancellor of the University of London from 1989 onwards . In 1994 he moved to Middlesex University , in 1999 to Touro College , New York, always in management positions, and from 2002 to 2006 he became Vice President of the American InterContinental University in London. He was then Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Center for Higher Education Policy Studies and Professor of Politics and Contemporary History at the University of Buckingham , Buckingham . In 2014 he became a Principal of Nelson College, London.

Alderman specializes in British and US contemporary history and politics. He is an expert on quality issues in higher education and a member of the Higher Education Academy , the Chartered Quality Institute and the Chartered Management Institute . He is the author and co-author of more than fifteen books, between 1994 and 2004 he was co-author of the Dictionary of National Biography and was responsible for the entries on the persons of Judaism after 1800. Alderman writes irregularly for national newspapers such as The Guardian , Spectator , Times Higher Education and Jewish Chronicle and is a columnist for the weekly Jewish Telegraph . He is a guest in the media as an expert on Middle Eastern political issues.

Alderman has been a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society since 1971 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts since 1991 . In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford for his work on modern Anglo-Jewish history.

Alderman's daughter is the writer Naomi Alderman .
