Geoffrey Allan Crossley
Geoffrey Allan Crossley CMG ( November 11, 1920 - June 13, 2009 ) was a British diplomat .
Life
Geoffrey Allan Crossley studied at Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge . After working for the Ministry of Supply , he worked at the Allied Forces Headquarters AFHQ in Algiers from December 1942 . When the Comité français de la Liberation nationale was formed, Crossley was the representative of the British Crown. In October 1944 he was transferred to Paris as second-class embassy secretary.
On October 30, 1945 he was appointed to the foreign service. In the Foreign Office , he was employed from January 21, 1948 as the third Secretary class. On November 11, 1948, he was promoted to second class embassy secretary. On August 20, 1949, he was sent to the United Nations Special Committee for the Balkans in Athens , where he occupied the changing seat of the United Kingdom from October 9, 1949. On April 29, 1952, he became Deputy Regional Information Officer in Singapore . On July 1, 1953, he was promoted to Secretary of the Embassy, First Class. From February 21, 1955 he was used again in the FCO. On June 28, 1957, he was appointed British Consul in Frankfurt am Main , where he served as Managing Consul General from 1957 to 1959. In August 1959 he was appointed to the political office of the Middle East Forces in Cyprus, where he served as political representative in 1961. In October 1961 he was posted to Bern, where he was chargé d'affaires.
Crossley then became head of the Department for West and North Africa in the Foreign Office, then Deputy High Commissioner in Lusaka . After a period at the embassy in Oslo , he became ambassador to Colombia and to the Holy See . He was informed about the papability of John Paul II early on .
