Geoffrey Paul

Geoffrey John Paul (March 4, 1921 - July 11, 1983 ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England from 1981 to 1983 .

Life

Paul attended Rutlish Grammar School. He studied at Queens' College of the University of Cambridge and at King's College London . He began his priestly career as a vicar ( curate ) in Little Ilford . He then went to India as a mission priest . There he worked in Palayamkottai in the state of Tamil Nadu in southeast India and later in Kerala . In Kerala he was a faculty member at the Kerala United Theological Seminary in Kannammoola; from 1961 to 1965 he was headmaster and principal there . On his return to Britain he became a member of the cathedral chapter and Residenzkanoniker ( residentiary Canon ) at the Bristol Cathedral .

In 1977 he was ordained a bishop . From 1977 to 1981 he was the "Bishop of Hull" suffragan bishop in the Diocese of York of the Church of England. In this capacity Paul was responsible for the direction of the diocese as bishop under the direction of the Archbishop of York , Stuart Blanch . In 1981 he became Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England , succeeding Ross Hook .

He was a member of the evangelical wing of the Church of England. Paul was a recognized expert on the New Testament ; he wrote u. a. the book A Pattern of Faith (published 1986). He was considered a "brilliant preacher and visionary churchman."

Paul was married and had five daughters. His daughter Hilary Jane Paul, born in 1957, married Rowan Williams , who later became Archbishop of Canterbury , in 1981 , and their daughter, Celia Paul , was born in 1959 and is an artist.
