Donald Snelgrove

Donald George Snelgrove ( April 21, 1925  - May 19, 2016 ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Hull in the Church of England from 1981 to 1994 .

Snelgrove came from Barton-upon-Humber in the North Lincolnshire district of northern England. He attended Queens' College in Cambridge . During World War II he served in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNRV). In preparation for his priesthood he studied at Ridley Hall College, a theological college of the Church of England, in Cambridge. In 1950 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1951 he was ordained a priest .

He began his priestly career as vicar ( curate ) at St Thomas Church in Oakwood in north London and at St Anselm Church in Hatch End in north-west London. He then held positions as pastor ( vicar ) at St John the Baptist's Church in Dronfield in Derbyshire and from 1963 in Hessle in Yorkshire . From 1970 to 1979 he was pastor ( Rector ) in Cherry Burton in East Riding of Yorkshire . He was Country Dean ( Rural Dean ) of Kingston-upon-Hull and canons ( Canon ) and Präbendar ( prebendary ) at York Minster . From 1970 to 1981 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon , head of a church parish) of East Riding. He also worked as a military chaplain ( Army Chaplain ).

In 1981 he was appointed suffragan bishop in the Church of England, succeeding Geoffrey Paul . From 1981 to 1994 he was Bishop of Hull in the Diocese of York. He was succeeded in 1994 by James Stuart Jones , who later became the Bishop of Liverpool . In his retirement, Snelgrove worked from 1995 as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Lincoln ( Honorary Assistant Bishop of Lincoln ).

Snelgrove was married. His wife, Sylvia, had two children, a son and a daughter. Snelgrove, most recently suffering from dementia , died at the age of 91 in the Ashleigh Court Care Home. The funeral service for Snelgrove was held on June 6, 2016 at St. Mary's Church in Barton-upon-Humber.
