Żabnica is a village with a Schulzenamt of the municipality Węgierska Górka in the powiat Żywiecki of the Silesian Voivodeship , Poland .

geography

The place lies on the brook Żabnica in the Saybuscher Beskids ( Beskid Żywiecki ).

Neighboring towns are Węgierska Górka in the northwest, Cięcina in the north, Cisiec and Milówka in the southwest.

history

The settlement probably originated in the first half of the 17th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1628.

During the first partition of Poland , Żabnica came to the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804).

Later in the 19th century the hamlets Koloniści (German: colonists ) and Niemcy (German: Germans ) emerged. In 1900 the village had 1966 inhabitants, of which 1855 were Polish-speaking, 89 were German-speaking, 14 spoke something else, in 1924 were Roman Catholic, 31 were Jews, 1 was of a different faith.

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Żabnica came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II .

From 1975 to 1998 Żabnica was part of the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
