Węgierska Górka is a village with around 4,000 inhabitants and the main town of the rural municipality of the same name in the powiat Żywiecki in the Polish Voivodeship of Silesia .
geography
Węgierska Górka is located in the West Beskids south of the city of Żywiec . The Soła River flows through the municipality and flows into the Vistula .
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1477. In 1629 a Vorwerk was founded there by Mikołaj Komorowski. One of the largest ironworks in Galicia was built between 1838 and 1844. In 1900 Węgierska Górka , the district of the Cięcina municipality , had 537 inhabitants in 72 houses, 460 of them Polish-speaking, 63 German-speaking, 476 Roman Catholic, 9 Jews, 52 of other faiths (mostly Protestant).
In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Węgierska Górka came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . A battle - also known as the Westerplatte of the South - took place there between September 2 and 3, 1939 .
