Jeleśnia is a rural municipality in the powiat Żywiecki in the Polish Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .
geography
Jeleśnia is 74 km southeast of Katowice , 12 km southeast of Żywiec and 65 km southwest of Krakow . On the Sopotnia and Koszarawa rivers .
history
Since 1467 the Saybusch rule belonged to the aristocratic Komorowski family, who ran a settlement campaign, including along the so-called copper route (to Orava ). Andrzej Komoniecki (* 1678, † 1729) mentioned the place and the church under the year 1584 in his chronicle. The community, settled by Wallachians , was rural from the start. According to linguists, the name is derived from the words jelcha , jelsza ( alder ), according to tradition, however, from deer ( jeleń ), i.e. there is a deer in the coat of arms.
The first wooden church was built before 1584, the second in 1628, the current third, in the years 1693–1702.
During the first partition of Poland in 1772 the village became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire (from 1804).
In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Jeleśnia came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the district of Saybusch in the administrative district of Katowice in the province of Silesia (since 1941 province of Upper Silesia ). As part of the so-called Saybusch Action , 150 Polish families (671 people) were expelled from Jeleśnia on September 22, 1940 in order to settle 42 ethnic German families (183 people).
From 1975 to 1998 Jeleśnia was part of the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
