Geographical Society Ø ( Danish also Geografisk Samfund Ø ) is a 1,717 km² large island in northeast Greenland . The island was named after the Royal Geographical Society in 1899 by Alfred Gabriel Nathorst .
The island, which administratively belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park, is located south of the Ymer Island and north of the Traill Island , separated from them by the Sofia and Vega Sound. To the west, on the other side of the König-Oskar-Fjord, is Ella Ø .
The highest point of the mountainous island is Svedenborg Bjerg in the west with 1730 m.
geology
From west to east the island consists of sandstone rocks from the Devonian , Carboniferous and Cretaceous ages, some smaller areas have sandstone from the Triassic and Jurassic .
