Location of the nature trail

The geological nature trail near Tännesberg is located in the south of the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt adWaldnaab .

geography

The nature trail was designed by Helmut Wolf and is located in the central Upper Palatinate Forest . The area belongs to the Northern Upper Palatinate Forest Nature Park . The Schlossberg (692 m above sea level) borders the nature trail.

Creation and expansion

In 1971/72 Bavaria's first geological educational trail was built on the southern slope of the “Goßbühl” as part of the “Tännesberg land consolidation” . The aim is to show the development of rock formation in the history of the earth. The nature trail was upgraded when it was expanded into a circular route in 2010/11. Stones weighing up to 26 tons can be found on the 2.6 km long circular route, which are set up according to their geological age.

Structure of the educational trail

The nature trail is located in a wooded area and can be walked on in any weather. It is divided into sections that roughly correspond to the duration of the respective geological age. The Precambrian phase is the only exception shown in shortened form because of its long duration. Information boards explain the individual types of rock to the visitor and show the geological development. If the viewer begins his hike at the parking lot at the foot of the Schlossberg (another parking lot is at the turning point of the educational trail, access via the signs to St. Jodokkirche ), he will find the following types of rock: gneiss , amphibolite , mica schist , marble , migmatite , metamorphic sedimentary rocks , Gabbro , diorite , redwitzite , granite , aplite , pegmatite , fluorspar and quartz veins , sandstone , limestone and basalt .

Audio guide

Since 2005 it has been possible to walk the nature trail with an audio guide . It can be borrowed from the administration of the market town of Tännesberg and from local hotels.
