Georg Karl Friedrich Franz von Sachsen-Altenburg (born July 24, 1796 in Hildburghausen ; † August 3, 1853 in Hummelshain ) was Prince of Sachsen-Hildburghausen , from 1826 Prince of Sachsen-Altenburg and from 1848 to 1853 Duke of Sachsen-Altenburg .

Life

Georg was a son of Duke Friedrich von Sachsen-Hildburghausen and his wife Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz .

From 1804 he served in Austria. Georg fought in the 3rd Uhlan Regiment in the Battle of Leipzig and entered Paris victoriously with Prince Schwarzenberg . During the Italian campaign in 1814, the prince was wounded in the left thigh and had to give up his military career.

Back in Hildburghausen, he lived with his brother Joseph in the Charlottenburg Palace there. Georg studied at Heidelberg University from 1816 to 1820 and was then appointed by King Maximilian I of Bavaria as his personal adjutant. Awarded the Order of Hubert by him in 1822 , he received permission to take permanent residence in Hildburghausen, where Georg redesigned the castle in Hellingen . Prince Georg founded a youth army in Hildburghausen and in 1824 the municipal savings bank .

In 1826 Georg's father became Duke of Saxony-Altenburg and the court moved into the new residence. Georg stayed in Hildburghausen until 1829 and then moved to Christiansburg Castle in Eisenberg . His farewell words to the local council were: “ It made me happy to be among the residents of this city for a few years after my relatives left, because I believe that I can benefit my good compatriots through a longer presence. "The Eisenberg superintendent Klötzner describes the prince:" Noble figure, beautiful face, bright, friendly eye, dignified demeanor, clear mind, deep mind, firm will, lively sense for nature and art, affable, simply frugal for his person, economical and yet happy to give, in his love for wife and sons the model of a right family father. "

Georg later lived with his family in the Altenburg Prinzenpalais. He succeeded his brother Joseph, who in 1848 renounced the throne as Duke of Saxe-Altenburg. The Duke reformed the financial administration, founded the "Georgenverein" to promote arts and crafts and further developed the Eisenberg Castle. In 1850 Georg founded an advance fund for poor craftsmen and spent his own funds on poor welfare, which earned him the name Georg the Good . In 1850 he solemnly received his brother Eduard's Altenburg battalion , which had fought victoriously in the Schleswig-Holstein war .

As early as May 28, 1853, due to health problems, he had handed the government over to his son Ernst and died on August 3 at the Hummelshain hunting lodge.
