Georg Adam Gmelin (born November 13, 1721 in Badenweiler ; † August 14, 1799 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German officer .

Life

Georg Adam Gmelin was born on November 13, 1721 as the 14th of 18 sons of Jeremias Gmelin (1673-1753). It is not known why he became a soldier ; Moriz Gmelin suspects that Georg Adam wanted to pave a way through his life himself. Little is known about his life up to the age of 35. During this period he had been an officer for ten years from 1744 and from 1748 captain of a battalion in Orange for six years . In 1757 he finally became captain for England and took part in three expeditions over the next few years. He finally returned to his homeland in 1763 and moved to Frankfurt the next year. There he married in 1765. In 1771 he received a position as quartermaster general and at the same time as marching and muster commissioner . He was also appointed colonel , and in 1784 major general . He died on August 14, 1799 in Frankfurt.

At first he was supposedly married to a woman who was believed to be from the Netherlands ; on August 6, 1765 he married Katharine Rosine Büttner, but both marriages remained childless. He donated a scholarship for related students.
