Georg Aportanus , also Jürgen vam Dare , (* around 1495 in Wildeshausen , † autumn 1530 in Emden ) was a theologian and reformer of East Frisia .

Life

Aportanus was born as the son of a councilor in Wildeshausen. He sent him to Zwolle , where he enjoyed his upbringing and education in the famous school of the brothers from living together . After studying in Cologne from 1512 to 1518 , he received his master's degree and served as vice-principal at the Latin school in Zwolle. In the same year of his graduation, he was called by Count Edzard I of East Friesland to Emden , where he was to raise his sons Enno and Johann and acquired a vicarie at the Groten Kerk in Emden.

During this time he carried out further studies of theology in self-study and was enthusiastic about the ideas of Martin Luther and began to emerge publicly in the evangelical sense in 1524. Under the protection of the count, he opposed the old believing priesthood and a strong contrast arose, so that he was forbidden from preaching in the pulpit. Convinced of the correctness of his faith, he preached outside the city gates. The citizens of Emden then demanded his reinstatement in the church, which the followers of the old doctrine ultimately had to follow.

In June 1526 there was the Oldersum Religious Discussion where Aportanus represented the Evangelicals as spokesman in the disputation against the Dominicans from Groningen and took a stand and took up Luther's teaching. In the same year Aportanus wrote 48 articles on the Lord's Supper. He rejected the term sacrament and wanted to understand the Lord's Supper figuratively. In his sobriety he went beyond Ulrich Zwingli . He turned sharply against the elevation practiced by the Lutherans. In addition, the first East Frisian confessional written by him appeared.

After the death of his benefactor, Count Edzard I of East Friesland, his son Enno succeeded him. During this time there were violent arguments about the doctrine of the sacrament. Subsequently, Aportanus wrote 16 articles about the actions of the authorities, whereby he seems to have been influenced in his radicalism by Andreas Bodenstein , who at that time was staying in East Frisia for eight months. When Aportanus died in 1530, the Reformation was largely established in Friesland .
