Life

As the son of a provincial tax director, Breusing grew up in Osnabrück. From 1838 he studied law at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1841 he passed the state examination there. In 1842 he went to the tax office in Leer (East Friesland) . In 1850 he became senior tax inspector at the tax office in Aurich . Married since September 15, 1852, he had two daughters and two sons; the older, Alfred Breusing , was a sea captain and distinguished admiral in the Imperial Navy.

As chief customs inspector in the seaport town of Emden in East Frisia , Breusing founded the first association for the rescue of shipwrecked people in Germany on March 2, 1861. This association only looked after the East Frisian coast. In 1868 he joined the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People ( DGzRS ), which was founded in Kiel in 1865. The rescue cruiser Georg Breusing , which was stationed on Borkum until 1988 , was named after him in 1963 . Today the cruiser is a museum ship in the council district of Emden. Volunteer members of the rescue cruiser "Georg Breusing" eV support group named after Breusing maintain the ship and keep the engines constantly at operating temperature.

The city of Emden honored Breusing by naming the bank at the Emden town hall after him. The cruiser is on the Georg-Breusing-Promenade and can be viewed.
