Georg Ernst (born May 27, 1511 in Schleusingen , † December 27, 1583 in Henneberg ) was the last ruling Count of Henneberg -Schleusingen.

Life

Georg Ernst was the son of Wilhelm VI. von Henneberg and Margravine Anastasia von Brandenburg. He was raised in his youth at the courts of Duke Albrecht in Königsberg in Prussia , Duke Wilhelm von Jülich and Landgrave Philipp von Hessen .

In 1530 he took part in the Reichstag in Augsburg . Standing in imperial service, he distinguished himself above all in the campaign against the Turks in 1542 . The weather vane with a cross and a crescent moon on the Schleusinger church tower is a reminder to this day of this battle in which Georg Ernst, Duke Moritz of Saxony, saved the life. In 1543 he married Elisabeth von Braunschweig-Hann. Münden , a staunch Protestant. With this marriage determined by his father to be co-regent in the county of Henneberg , he introduced the Reformation in the Henneberg region in 1544. In addition, the establishment of a humanistic high school with alumni as a Henneberg state school in Schleusingen since 1577 has been one of his main earnings. With this grammar school, which still exists today as the Henneberg grammar school "Georg Ernst" , the last sovereign has set himself a permanent monument. After the death of his first wife in 1566, Georg Ernst had the family burial site moved from Veßra Monastery to the Aegidia Chapel in Schleusingen's town church. In 1568 he married a second time - Elisabeth von Württemberg . This marriage also had no offspring.

On December 27, 1583, Georg Ernst died as the last of his tribe in the village of Henneberg near Meiningen . He was buried in the family chapel of the Schleusingen town church, where his grave statue is still to this day. With Georg Ernst the line Henneberg-Schleusingen died out.
