Georg Feigl
Georg Feigl (born October 13, 1890 in Hamburg , † April 20, 1945 in Wechselburg ) was a German mathematician .
Life
Georg Feigl studied mathematics at the University of Jena from 1909 . In 1918 he received his doctorate under Paul Koebe . From 1928 he was editor of the yearbook on the progress of mathematics . In 1935 he was appointed full professor at the University of Breslau .
His main areas of work concern the basics of geometry and topology .
He was one of the initiators of the mathematical dictionary . Because of the threatened siege by the Red Army, he had to leave Wroclaw with his family and other members of the Mathematical Institute in January 1945. His wife Maria was largely related to the lord of the castle in Wechselburg and was able to prepare a recording there in the castle. Feigl arrived there with other members of the institute in January. He brought the material he had worked out so far and had the students in the castle copy it for further development. There were neither typewriters nor calculating machines, nor any books or lecture notes. Johann Radon (1887–1956) and Feigl were ready and able to continue one hour of the lectures that had started in Breslau every day at Wechselburg Castle, even without documents. Feigl had a severe stomach ailment and died after a few months without medication in Wechselburg. The dictionary could only appear in 1961 under Hermann Ludwig Schmid (1908–1956) and Josef Naas (1906–1993).
