Georg Heeger

Georg Heeger (born November 19, 1856 in Westheim (Palatinate) ; † May 12, 1915 in Würzburg ) was a German teacher, musicologist, local researcher, politician and botanist. He had a doctorate and also held the title of "high school professor".

Georg Heeger grew up in Westheim in the Palatinate . His father was Adam Heeger, a farmer and musician, his mother Elisabeth was a daughter of the long-time mayor Andreas Teutsch. As a youth, Georg Heeger was supported by the pastor Johann Schiller . He received lessons in the ancient languages ​​from him and was prepared for attending the preparatory school in Edenkoben . He then completed training at the teachers' seminar in Kaiserslautern and later took up his first teaching position in Offenbach an der Queich . In 1877 he passed his school leaving examination and then began to study philology in Munich. He then worked as an assistant at a grammar school in Zweibrücken and from 1882 to 1907 teacher at the humanistic grammar school in Landau (today: Eduard Spranger grammar school ). During his activity as a teacher he continued to study and received his doctorate from the University of Munich in 1886. phil. This was followed by positions as vice rector of the district high school in Kaiserslautern (from 1907) and as rector of the Realgymnasium in Würzburg (from 1912). He was also a member of the Bavarian State Parliament in Munich for two years .

He published numerous texts on the history of Landau and the southern Palatinate and also edited collections of Palatinate folk songs. He also conducted research in the field of botany. Among other things, he discovered a new type of plant that was named Capsella Heegeri after him .

In his hometown, Dr.-Georg-Heeger-Allee is named after him.

His son Fritz Heeger (1895–1983) continued to publish the Palatinate folk songs that his father had collected and was also active in the field of folklore.
