Georg Heinrich Borz
Georg Heinrich Borz (born March 21, 1714 in Engelstein / Landkreis Angerburg , † January 31, 1799 in Leipzig ) was a German mathematician.
Life
After studying in Königsberg , Gdansk and Halle (Saale) , he moved to Leipzig in 1742, where he continued his studies. In 1763 he became an associate professor for mathematics at the University of Leipzig . After Gottfried Heinsius' death , Borz became a full professor of mathematics at the University of Leipzig in 1769. He held this office until his death. In 1772, 1780 and 1786 he was rector of the university.
Act
Borz was the first to give lectures on differential and integral calculus in Leipzig . He also worked on practical applications of mathematics, a. a. to mechanics and astronomy. Together with Carl Friedrich Hindenburg (1741–1808) Borz initiated the establishment of the university observatory in Leipzig. Borz was a founding member and first president of the Princely Jablonowskische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaft in Leipzig. He was also dean of the Philosophical Faculty several times.
