Georg Johann Scharf

Georg Johann Scharf (born April 19, 1788 in Mainburg , † November 11, 1860 in Westminster , London ) was a German naval , miniature and genre painter , watercolorist and lithographer who worked in London for a long time.

Life

Scharf's first artistic training took place in Geisenfeld in 1801 with a painter named Kiermeyer. From 1805 to 1810 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (from 1806 Royal Academy of Fine Arts ) in Munich under Joseph Hauber . Around 1808 he traveled through France and Belgium. Around 1811 he was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, 1814/15 in the service of the British Army. From 1817 he took part in the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. From 1833 to 1836 Scharf was a member of the New Society of Painters in Water Colors . In 1845 he traveled to Bavaria with stays in Mainburg, Munich and Regensburg, and in 1848 he returned to London.

His son was the painter and art writer George Scharf .
